Vacation Watch Service
Vacations are a time of year that everyone should be able to enjoy.
Worrying about the safety of your residence while you are away should
be the last thing on your mind. Vacation Watches are a courtesy
service that the Salem Police Department provides to the citizens
of the city. The dates of your departure and return are recorded
in our Vacation Watch Log Book. The officers will then make random,
physical checks on your home during your absence. Registering for
for this service is very simple. Just provide the following information
by phoning the Salem Police Department at 883-1524, or faxing the
information at least 24 hours prior to your departure. (This service
is for Salem City Residents only.)
Please provide the following information:
Name, Address, Date Leaving, Date Returning, Vehicles Left at the
Residence (Description and Plate Number), Lights Left On, Pets Left
at the Residence, Key Holder's Name and Address, Key Holder's Phone
Number.

Salem Police Department Information
The Salem Police Department is located at number 38 on the southeast
corner of the public square in Salem. The City of Salem is located
in the Heart of Washington County, which is approximately thirty
minutes north of Louisville Kentucky. We currently employ twelve
full-time officers, five dispatchers, ten reserve officers, and
one administrative assistant.
The current administration is headed by Chief Brian Scott Ratts,
Assistant Chief of Police Troy Merry, and Major Roy Overshiner.
These three individuals bring to the department over 45 years of
combined
law enforcement experience.
All full-time and reserve officers are are employed under the
following standards:
Full-Time Officers
Must be a resident citizen of the United States
Must have obtained a High School Diploma or GED Equivalent.
Must be at least Twenty-One (21) years of age and not exceed Thirty-Six
(36) years of age.
Cannot have a felony conviction
Cannot have a misdemeanor conviction involving domestic violence
under [18 USC §922 (g)]
Must possess a valid driver's license from their state of residence
Must be a resident of Washington County, Indiana or one of the
adjoining counties at the time of appointment to the Department
Cannot have been dishonorably discharged from the military
Must pass a physical agility test mandated by the State of Indiana.
( Adheres closely to the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy Requirements
)
Must pass the firearms qualification test with the current department-issue
firearm.
Must pass the medical and psychological evaluations under the Public
Employees Retirement Fund (www.in.gov/perf/)
Attend & complete the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy within
one year of the hire date. (www.state.in.us/ilea/)
Maintain a minimum of 15 hours of law enforcement training per
year.
Reserve Officers
Must be a resident citizen of the United States
Must have obtained a High School Diploma or GED Equivalent.
Must possess a valid driver's license from their state of residence.
Cannot have a felony conviction
Cannot have a misdemeanor conviction involving domestic violence
under [18 USC §922 (g)]
Cannot have been dishonorably discharged from the military
Pass a forty (40) hour pre-basic course developed by the Indiana
Law Enforcement Academy.
Maintain a minimum of 15 hours of law enforcement training per
year.
Maintain a minimum of 24 hours of service per month plus other
assigned duties.
