Welcome to the City of Salem, Indiana!

The first inhabitants of the area that would become Salem, Indiana were the Delaware Indians. The City of Salem was founded in 1814 by early settlers that were attracted to the abundance of rolling terrain, raw materials, wildlife and a confluence of two streams (now known as Brock Creek and Blue River). The City of Salem was founded two years before Indiana was established as our 19th state.

For much of its existence, the center piece for Salem’s town square has been the Washington County Courthouse. The first courthouse, built on pillars, aquired the nickname of “The Stilted Castle of Justice,” and opened in 1816, but by 1824 was deemed unsubstantial and was ordered replaced. The present day courthouse -- the third at that location -- opened in 1888, and is a spectacular structure that today stands as one of the crown jewels among Indiana’s 92 courthouses.

As a city, Salem has retained much of its small town flavor, a flavor that is enhanced by the city’s tree-lined streets, stately old homes and a friendly atmosphere that has been nurtured and handed down through the generations. Our community provides excellent schools, a healthy business climate, museums, public parks, playgrounds and numerous other facilities that provide recreational activities for all ages.

Airport being maintained while plans continue for the new facility
In hopes of bringing jobs to Washington County and improving the lives of residents, the Board of Aviation Commissioners continues to make improvements to the Salem Municipal Airport.

Lowell DePoy, a contracted manager of the airport, gave a report at the city council meeting last Monday, stating many of the improvements that have been made at the facility. DePoy said he does as much maintenance as he can around the facility by himself, trying to save the airport money. Some of the improvements made include cleaning up hanger spaces, reattaching and securing the metal roof, fixing smoke detectors, cleaning offices, installing and painting window trim in all the offices, making the restrooms clean and operational, replacing the flag and furnace filters.

The airport also has a refrigerator, microwave, coffee pot and a television so those who fly in and out have a place to grab a snack, a cup of coffee or to just relax.

DePoy had more than 40 improvements that have been made in the past year and has more on his list to do, including holding an open house for the public, bringing back aviation days and aggressively renting more hangers and office space. Read More on this Story
