February is spay and neuter awareness month and the Mayor’s Office would like to encourage you to have your pet spayed or neutered to help protect our pet population. We know that having our pets spayed or neutered provides many benefits for keeping both our pets and our community healthy and well.

Animals that are not spayed or neutered are more likely to wander and stray animals can find their way into garbage cans, damage property, and cause car accidents. An increase in the animal population can also contribute to more dog attacks and bites. Finally, one last issue impacts our pocketbooks. Communities nationally are having to spend millions of tax dollars every year to provide care for unwanted, abandoned, and neglected animals, including a great deal of expense here in Washington County. These concerns could be mitigated by simply spaying or neutering your pet, ensuring that the possibility of stray animals is contained.

To have your pet spayed or neutered, please schedule a visit with your local veterinarian. SNSI or Spay and Neuter Services of Indiana provides an affordable option for low-income families to have your pet spayed or neutered. This program comes with a $25 fee per pet and is available to residents that have a household income at or below 200% of Federal Poverty guidelines or Indiana residents that have been accepted in certain needs-based public assistance programs. Please visit the SNSI website listed below to see if you qualify and for a link to the application. It can be found at https://petfriendlyservices.org/spay-neuter-services/spay-neuter-assistance-program-snap.

If you do not qualify for the SNSI program, you may submit a P.A.L. or Prevent a Litter application to the Humane Society of Washington County. This program provides a low-cost option for all Washington County residents. The fee for this program is based on the size of the animal and ranges from $25 -$50.

The requirements to participate in this program are:

Applicants must be Washington County residents, limited to two animals per resident, per twelve months.

The money cannot be used for laser surgery.

Applicants must use a participating veterinarian.

The money cannot be used if declawing, tail docking, ear cropping, or any other mutilating procedure is to be done.

The application for this program can be found at http://www.hswcin.org/spay%20and%20neuter.html.

You can also visit or contact the Humane Society of Washington County at 812-883-3673 for more information about both programs.

With these great programs available to ease the financial burden on the residents of Salem, we want to encourage our community pet owners to take advantage of these low-cost options. Help make your pet and Salem safer by having them spayed or neutered.
